From the sewage plant in Danbury, to the recycling center in Australia, and now a trash bin in Malmo. The John Oliver Cinematic Trash Disposal Universe just keeps on expanding. So excited for the next installment.
better than the MCU, lol
I would suggest the Mangere Poo Ponds here in Auckland, but they got a make over a while back.
You mean the TDCU?
Wonder if he’ll cover the trash wheel here in MD
JOCTDU stans
As someone who's from Malmö, this is literally the proudest moment of my entire life
Don't worry. You're still young.
😂❤❤🎉
I found it funny that he called it a "small city" - it is, of course, but in Sweden I'm used to think of it as the third largest city in the country
Zlatan?
Congrats?
As a Finnish person who had mandatory Swedish classes in school and university, understanding the trash can has been the most utility I have gotten out of my Swedish lessons.
Glad that our fine-and-not-at-all-imperialistic-class-that-will-haunt-the-swedish-government-in-the-future is finally getting used, because forcing Finns to learn it is totally justified
Xoxo swede❤
(If it wasn’t clear, /s)
As a Norwegian who has had conversations with Finns talking Swedish i appreciate your suffering, tho we could also have just talked in English :p
there's a metaphor in that somewhere :)
Yeah, mandatory Swedish in Finland is bullshit... And I say that as a Swedish citizen.
As a danish person who has grown up very close to Sweden, I now see the point of my trials
John Oliver's commitment to a bit is absolutely legendary. I love it.
The commitment of this show to its jokes is unrivaled.
I love how there were multiple jokes in play in this video. With people like Daniel O'brien on the writing staff, it makes sense that they would know how to make great videos like this!
The jokes are really not funny, though. Haven't been for many years. I used to laugh out loud during many of his earlier episodes. I don't know why he decreased his jokes quality so drastically.
@S K I think the medium has gotten old, and j.o & Co. do not appear capable of a new one. Like, how about having guests on? Or something, anything other than the monologue that it is?
@BlockinRock Beats I agree, a little change might help.
Excuse you, but some people have committed their lives to uninteresting and, some would say, poor jokes. *humpphh*
Man if I was a tax accountant, this would be the only place I'd work at just for the sheer insanity of their business expenses.
I think i can confidently say that this is the only TV show that really gets KRclip. The lead singer of the Cardigans throwing cursed dolls into talking trash cans is just next level content
I'll counter with Seth Meyers' own Web Exclusive segment, Corrections. Seth has courted and encouraged KRclip's nitpickers, and uses their responses as the basis for improv-y comedy.
Yes, this really took the cake.
@Solitare I stopped watching Seth when it became apparent that he's low-key a spokesperson for the DNC.
I live in the U.S., and I want to make it clear that I do NOT vote Republican. I am not conservative. I do not see the values that the two parties (claim to) support as being equal. But any legitimately progressive person knows that there is much to also criticize in the Democratic Party, which Seth essentially refused to do most of the time. Maybe he's gotten better about it - I haven't watched him for a while now - but I doubt it.
John at least goes there sometimes, though not as effectively as Cody Johnston from the channel Some More News (VERY long videos, but hilarious and well-researched). Cody is not at all conservative; a video from 6 days ago is titled "What Conservative Hypocrisy Reveals About Their Ideology." Seth though...doesn't seem to see through the two-party system shenanigans, let alone forces like Wall Street that take advantage of both sides. I got excited about Amber having her own show, only to watch it and realize she was even more of a DNC mouthpiece than Seth was. Terribly sad and disappointing.
Nina Persson is a national treasure! She is also such a good sport to participate in this super weird exercise.
egg with. They said she was the only person they knew there
And really, the Cardigans are an amazing band! Very melancholic indie
I want to like this comment but it has 666 likes so I'll just comment and say I appreciate your comment!
Good on Nina for being such a great sport! I love when the most random of people can play along with a weird bit for the show.
5:35 ok but this is actually super exciting because polystyrene is notoriously hard to recycle. There is quite literally not a single recycling plant in the US that can actually recycle it!
Oh it’s not getting recycled. All that polystyrene is going to be sent to John Oliver in time for next season.
Oh, the things that the US can't do...
My recycling center takes polystyrene and I live in nowhere wisconsin
you got a touch of the tism? /lh
John's energy in the web exclusives is unlike any other. This segment is a perfect example.
I might have missed Woodstock by a couple of decades but I'm very glad I live in a time in which John Oliver is alive, absolute legend !
"Please stop sending me your garbage babies" is exactly what my daycare asked my mother and father when I was six.
Savage.
😂🤣😂🤗🖖
👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
Is this Steve Jocz?
@Bud Maynard no, it's old gregg. A scaly man fish just looking for love.
As someone who grew up in Malmö, this made my day. 🤣🤣🤣 And also made me slightly homesick. It's a lovely city.
It looks lovely. I visited Sweden about 20 years ago and saw some of the western part, but not much more than that. I visited the church where the first Christian King of Sweden is buried. I never can remember the name. It was a truly fascinating place.
Is it the Ohio of Sweden?
@sakurakhadag nah, it’s probably Borås
@sakurakhadag its the denmark of Sweden
well... now you have more garbage there that was not really properly disposed. i feel sorry for you
I was recently in Antwerp and went to throw away trash, and when the trashcan started thanking me, I was wholly unprepared. Glad to see other cities also have jump scare trash cans.
What a combo. Love the cardigans, love Nina, love John Oliver. 😎♥️
As a Swede living in Malmö i'm honored, although I'm as confused as everyone else what "the Ohio of Sweden" means. But you put a light on our trash cans so I guess it's fine! You're welcome here anytime, John!
I used to cross the bridge where that specific garbage can is located every day on my way to work. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would one day be the stage for this beautiful spectacle. Also good to know where all the cursed energy in the city will now be gathering!
The stuff you guys come with is so imaginative and entertaining, Thank You all for all the laughs, and Happy Wonderful Holidays to you...
Just imagining the conversation between some LWT executive producer and the manager/producer for Nina explaining this whole bit is too good.
This is genuinely one of the best segments you've ever done. Start to finish the timing and jokes were all perfect!
Two things I appreciate about John Oliver 1) Even when he isn't doing his show he gives us little snippets to help tide us over during the wait. 2) He finds some of the weirdest sh*t on which to spend HBO's money.
And how much return on investment do you think his crazy s*** generates
His birth name is actually Larry. You are welcome. boy.
HBO recently did a BUNCH of cuts to shows and staff etc. They sadly got rid of Westworld, for instance.
If they so much as consider doing that to this show......I say we burn the world to the ground.
Who's on board?
@Crusaderf B A metric ton
Legit journalism with depth, wit, and just the right amount of playfulness - tempered with international cooperation. This is what global communication is all about
Everything about this whole segment is just perfect... John and the team have outdone themselves. Hilarious!
Some days there is no one I love more than John Oliver.
How the hell am I supposed to survive until February after that gem without you? Seeing you on Amber's show was spectacular.
I know. The hiatus kills me.
I love how much he hyped her up!! If the Bird Network drops her, I wonder if he can talk Business Daddy into picking her up?
@Amanda Garcia I love when he uses the phrase "business daddy". It sounds so perverted the way he says it.
As someone who visited Malmo in 2013 just to strike off Sweden as a country from my ‘countries visited’ list, I have just become so very proud of my decision.
As always jon. A big thanks to you and your staff for always uploading your main story (and web stories) to youtube.
Nice way to pay homage to a legendary band. John is always on point. ❤
Damn... Even in a throw away web exclusive purely comedic episode Oliver's team manages to squeeze in more journalism than Faux News in any random 24 hours run of broadcast.
You know it's a good Last Week Tonight segment when you're screaming "Oh no...oh no! OH NO!" and laughing as the segment goes on.
OMG I love The Cardigans, and I love Nina... and I love talking garbage cans which are capable of destroying demonic dolls... another perfect segment! Happy Holidays, everyone! 🌠
Congratulations fan you've been selected among our lucky winners of the year. Kindly contact us on tele-gram ⬆️
Anyone who says "yes" to a Last Week Tonight request just enjoys watching the world burn and probably has a "let's just see what will happen" outlook on life. Absolute gem.
I remain delighted & also stunned by the number of folks they get to go along with their shenanigans. Quite an accomplishment!
A bit of a "Dark Knight" reference in a comment on a vid in which John says sometimes they "just do things". Another entry in my satisfaction (ahem) ledger.
I have to say that there is a more famous person from Malmo. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is from there and I really wonder if they contacted him, cause I am really curious as to how he woiuld react to something like this
@Fons Speek I have never heard of him, but to be fair i wouldn't have known who this woman was if he didn't say 'lead singer of the cardigans' either
@KCALBLABEL00797 Can I ask where you are from? Cause he is one of the most famous football players in the world... And even if you're one of those people who incorrectly call it "soccer", he played in the US as well and scored some amazing goals there too
Three words: Plasma Waste Incinerators. I would love it if Oliver would do a segment on them because they appear to have tremendous potential dealing with our waste issues and few people have even heard of them.
I'm definitely crushing on the fact that it looked like Nina brought the babies to the can in a cargo bike 😍 That's pretty cool.
She did what a legend
Of course she did, she is a Swedish city-dweller, she probably takes kid to daycare with that bike and shops at IKEA with it too
@Someoneelse I'm so incredibly jealous that it is "normal" in that situation. In my city in the US I've never even seen another rider on a cargo bike. Mostly the streets around me are lonely places full of grumpy people in deadly metal boxes 😞
@Een Schildpad Dont worry, we’re lonely and grumpy in Sweden too.
you commented purely to insert "I'm definitely crushing on the fact"... into any sentence to seem cool. Unfortunately it was your credibility that has been crushed.
Thank you John Oliver, Nina Persson, and Daniel O'Brien for this wonderful, life-enriching experience.
The culmination of story arcs here towers over anything Hollywood has done in the last decade. Amazing work.
As a swede, I approve this message! ☝️ Greetings from Malmö
on a scale of Vermont to Ohio where does Malmö stand
@Super Catman Imma say approx Brie/10
Greetings from Ohio! Maybe John can manage a cultural exchange?
@DavidThat would be enrichening! Although I must give thou a warning, my speech is dogsh!t :O
As an Ohioan, I say hello! ☺️
Is it weird that I am excited for the update and conclusion of this story line?
The nightmare babies were haunting me.
Don't think I could've ended the year without a conclusion to this. NOW I can have a happy new year and a merry Christmas.
I love this guy. A great news team with a perfect amount of shitposting spice.
That was def a hit when I was in Middle/High School! Still stuck in my head.
I love that she rode a cargo bike to throw them out❤️🚲
I’m glad the demon baby arc came to such a satisfying end. All loose ends wrapped up in a bow just in time for Christmas. John never disappoints.
end? just wait for them to wash up on another beach now
@Gray Hand That’s horrifyingly genius
@Frédéric Bruyèrethey will return. Somebody emptying the garbage rescued them
@meh! The creepy dolls that just won't die!!
Literally need to visit all the random spots from this show, another type of tourist selection for the win.
You are amazing John, and the world is better because of men like you!
These snippets that John produces even when he's off the air is one more reason I LOVE John Oliver!
Never thought I'd see the singer of the Cardigans dispose of mutated dolls but that was perfect. Thank you.
Summer is considered the horniest season in Sweden because there's a greater amount of outdoor "activities". (Personally I find the fall season most romantic, the spring season the most nostalgic and the part of the year where the sun is up less than I am; the most depressing.)
And I don't know enough about Ohio to dispute it being the Malmö of the US, but people do seem to be eager to use it as a geographic comparison point. (I would have thought of Malmö as the Chicago, due to the crime problems, but Chicago is already city brother with Gothenburg, so whatever.)
Love the "off the rails" vibe of these web exclusives! Feels like John, on his break, thought, "what's this? Fouled mouth trash can in a remote city hundreds of miles from where I live? that'll do!"
“hundreds” might just be a *slight* bit off
Mohammad Aybakar, please hit that Follow to know where Elon Musk's Jet is
@Express cheating not for me... I'm in Michigan.
Dan O'Brian strikes again
Very adhd on crack I love it
You guys are impeccably making the world a better place to live, ❣️
All ways classy. You make me think and laugh. 😊 Thanks. I'm gonna buy your seasons soon. Your a classic.
A few things. Horrified to be reminded of those hideous dolls. I've actually been to Malmo many times for work. Those trash receptacles were tried in my hometown (not talking versions but solar powered with the deep chute). They were very quickly reviled as the chutes became incredibly disgusting right away. Seriously, they were stomach turning and could only be used with a partner opening while you both looked away and you running to drop your refuse in as quickly as possible then everyone gagging for a couple minutes. The chutes have since been replaced with rubber flaps but a mostly failed attempt at receptacle "modernization".
I adore Nina Persson and The Cardigans, especially the Gran Turismo album. Excellent to see that, uh... plotline get a solid ending. I guess?
As someone from Yarra Australia i am incredibly proud of my city
The fact this show gets so many people to play along is amazing.
These writers really understand how the internet works
First Band On the Moon by The Cardigans (the album LoveFool is from) is an excellent album as a whole and totally holds up to time. 10/10 recommend listening to it.
What a funny video you gave us for the holidays. Thank you!
Enjoy your break. Can’t wait for you to come back.
Honestly I think John Oliver is so freaking hilarious when he's not doing political hit pieces. I mean a celebrity throwing demon babies into a talking garbage can is just comedic gold.
As a garbage man, I love this.
"I'm just disposing of an American's trash" is probably one of the most terrifying things for someone from a different country to hear.
...or from America..
It would be even more disturbing if we send them 45.
Another terrifying thing you would not want to hear when Americans are talking about your country is "we found an abundant supply of oil "
We need to petition HBO to shorten John Oliver's break or have him put out 1 of these a week until he comes back. Evertime he goes on break he takes my laughter with him. ☹️
Our local city’s trash cans are terrifying, imagine 30 small children saying “thank you for keeping our city clean” in perfect unison every time you throw your trash
NO WAYYYY
Honestly cannot wait until this show returns, excited for the field day they'll have from the past few weeks.
That was incredibly entertaining as well as educational. I have to say as awesome as that was there were some incredible missed opportunities with that trashcan. I wonder if those trashcan are internet accessible 🤔
few things here. first cheers to you John & LWT not only bringing a helpful reminder to us all about all of our trash, but pointing out sexy talking garbage cans (of which I do hope you acquire at least one), your vast collection of oddities, and that you now have yet another brilliant place honoring your name. Let me fast forward to what needs to be said now, that is where is the John Oliver museum of oddities, the creepy dolls, frog statues, various costumes and such in your collection could certainly find home there. Where I ask that you sell plenty of merch, including but not limited to new stamps. Please hear me Mr. Oliver even if you don't indeed follow the comments, someone get this info where it needs to be, we need a museum so we can see all of these treasures and all you acquire in the future.
I feel like this wasn’t a bad suit/tie combo. The navy on navy was a little much, but the pop of the light blue shirt, along with the blue background, kind of works. 7/10.
Was watching this while I was falling asleep, and let me tell you, nothing is weirder than hearing moaning and John cracking sex jokes while half unconscious
John, I'd just like you to know that there's been big news of a fight on a boat in Rhode Island recently and it made me think of you.
Thanks for always being so informative and funny.
Congratulations fan you've been selected among our lucky winners of the year. Kindly contact us on tele-gram for your gift
more people should say yes to the show's request just to see what happens. They're a TV (kinda) news show, what really is the worse that could happen?
Loved this! It actually inspired a story... (courtesy of Chat GPT)...
John Oliver had always been a bit of a loner. He had never really found his place in the world and had always struggled to connect with others. So when he moved to a small seaside town in Sweden, he wasn't exactly thrilled at the prospect of making new friends.
But as he was walking down the street one day, he heard a voice that completely changed his life. It was the voice of a trashcan, but not just any trashcan. This trashcan had a sexy, sultry voice that immediately caught John's attention.
He couldn't believe his ears and had to do a double take to make sure he wasn't hallucinating. But no, there it was, a shiny metal trashcan with a voice like honey.
John was fascinated and couldn't resist the urge to talk to the trashcan. To his surprise, the trashcan responded and they struck up a conversation.
As it turned out, the trashcan's name was Sven and it had been cursed by a group of demonic plastic baby dolls that had risen from the depths of the ocean and were wreaking havoc on the town.
John was shocked and vowed to help Sven rid the town of these evil dolls. They formed an unlikely alliance and set out on a mission to save the town.
As they worked together, John found himself falling in love with Sven and his unique personality. And to his amazement, Sven seemed to return his feelings.
In the end, they were able to defeat the dolls and save the town from their wicked ways. And as they stood victorious, John knew that he had finally found his place in the world and the one he wanted to share it with: a Swedish trashcan with a sexy voice named Sven.
I feel like there should be a lot more Last Week Tonight episodes cut with footage of elderly people looking confused and/or horrified.
Lol
Kuleshov Effect
Yuuuuus
@HS22181 Thanks for making me google that, was an interesting read!
_~standing ovation~_
What a lovely story of love, and loss, and dejection, and new hope, and the end of a nightmare, at last, with the end of the demon dolls. I laughed, I cried, I... I truly felt nauseated!
😄😏
Well done, John Oliver & co, thank you for this!
(Edited my careless mistake)
Give this show writer and producer a fing raise already!!!
The writer's of this show don't get enough credit
I’ve actually been to Malmo! Spent a couple nights there. I found it very lovely. But then, I was born and raised in Ohio. So. 🤷🏼♀️😂
To me the weirdest thing was how very few people locked their bikes up…. Very trusting city. So yes. I’m not surprised they acquiesced to John’s very strange request. 😂
Thank you John! Thank you Malmo and all your wonderful residents!
This is the first time in YEARS that I have literally laughed out loud to John Oliver. Today is a good day
The absolute shock of having Malmö mentioned by John Oliver first thing in the morning is real
Am taking this to mean you live there? The teeny ancillary shots of the area look lovely. Makes me long to visit!
Rofl I love it
@Kristine Munholland it’s a cute city I love it
@Kristine Munholland if you do I reccommend that you visit the Disgusting Food Museum, just out of shot across the bridge.
I lived in Copenhagen for a bit and visited Malmö regularly. This was definitely surprising and what a fun segment too!
My ex introduced me to Jamie a few years ago. I used to watch like a child being forced to do a chore. Thinking this was some white people stuff lmao. Now I love all his videos. Definitely appreciate his clever humor. Jamie makes adulting way more bearable. Thank you Grace I miss you. ❤️
As someone living in Malmo, I wasn't even remotely surprised about those trash cans, someone was probably bored 😂😂 and Malmo is the third largest city in Sweden (not a small harbor city), I don't know a lot about Ohio so as you said, you said it so it must be true☝️😌😂🍀
It's amazing to think that the 3rd-largest city in Sweden would be the 57th-largest city in the U.S., just below Honolulu, Hawaii and just above Henderson, Nevada.
It did look like more than just a small harbor city, so thanks for the info!
@Mick Cullen at the same time, part of Malmö’s “thing” is that it’s also a suburb of Copenhagen, in a way. Since Sweden and Denmark have free movement between each other it’s perfectly possible to live in Malmö and work in Copenhagen. Or in my case, stay in Malmö every time I visit Copenhagen. Even after factoring in the train fare, I save quite a bit.
@yangj08 As a Swede, I would never call Malmo a suburb of a captial of a neighbouring country, especially since we fought many wars about it 😅 but I see what you mean with the free movement thing and there is absolutely a close relationship between the countries and cities 😊
Ohio is a state, and Malmö is a city, soooo... 😕
I can confidently say that whatever John Oliver & his team comes up with: "I will not have it on my random fuckery bingo card"
Best show....not stuck on Trump this or That......JO, you are the best, we know you don't have an obsessive compulsive behavior like other hosts. Keep up the good work.
How can this be a youtube exclusive? That was peek John Oliver! I have tears in my eyes.
Absolutely died when John called me out for checking how much time was left on the video exactly right after I had done just that. What a legend!
Hahaha yeah, I did that too, felt priceless.
I had checked literally less than a second before that. XD
Yesss, same here! 🤣
Same here 😄
And that was truly the exact moment I checked!
There is just nothing like a Northern European speaking English. It's just so entertaining, they make the language really sing. The bluntness just works.
I love this so much. Made my life so much better through laughter. Except for the fact that now lovefool is stuck in my head.
Watching Last Week Tonight is good for the mind, body, and soul... probably is extending life spans through the endorphins related to laughter.
Yeah. Endorphins are one of the things that keep me from aging as quickly as some of my extended family.
I have a cat.
THIS is why I love this show and John...TOP marks
Playing Norwegian music over a Swedish segment, 10/10 burn. You guys really nailed Scandinavian infighting.
Congratulations fan you've been selected among our lucky winners of the year. Kindly contact us on tele-gram for your gift
I cannot describe how much I love this show. I don't even understand how you get me every time. Pure gold.
Exceptionally fantastic episode, my friend! This one should be used for awards. Is it a sparkle in the twinkle or a twinkle in the sparkle of your eyes?
"I don't speak Swedish and I'm simply not willing to learn" is my new motto
Someone told John to "commit to the bit" and he ran with it. All the way to the airport, where an F-15 supersonic fighter jet was waiting to carry him and his wisdom to the nearest Space Centre, so he could place 'it' onto the first rocket into space, or something. I don't know I wasn't there but it sounds plausible enough.
John is an international treasure.
Honestly, this is very smart Malmö. I have lived in many different places across the U.S. and 10/10 if there's garbage on the ground, you do NOT want to live there. It's the absolute quickest way to weed out a neighborhood. Everything else always follows it: loud noises, graffiti, vandalism, theft, drugs, violence, etc. I'm not saying a area that has garbage on the ground has all this, but it's ALWAYS the first step to it becoming all these things. The minute citizens quite caring about keeping things clean for others, then it's not long before they take things to the next level.
Can’t someone in Malmö make it their mission to retrieve these dolls, and then send them back to the studio? 😂
Usually those trash bins compact the trash they get. What LWT would get back could be genuinely terrifying. 😂
That would be AWESOME. Malmö trolls assemble!!
Omg I'm here for this. Compacted demon garbage babies assembled into one amorphous Swedish troll doll with neon hair, arriving in the LWT studio in a well-staged "surprise" delivery (and discussing how outsourcing your landfills by shipping trash overseas is even worse than just making landfills locally) sounds like a fantastic episode. Please let this happen...
@one_field I WAS THINKING ABOUT THAT!! 😹😹😹😹😹😹
@Kady Liang OK, but being worse just makes it better
you do get how that's even better?
As usual well played, John Oliver and team 👏 but I must say I was a bit disappointed because I've been ruminating a bit on the garbage management problem 😅 I hope you guys will really cover that subject someday 😆
Congratulations fan you've been selected among our lucky winners of the year. Kindly contact us on tele-gram ⬆️
I loved this web extra. I have a friend in Sweden and shared this with him on Facebook.
This show is the only thing that gets me through the days. Thank you John Oliver and team! You're amazing! Can I please be invited to your show :) Pweeeese :)
