Imagine getting stoned and making some memes, forgetting about it, and then seeing your memes grow into a professionally produced comedy segment on HBO. I love this show.
I think the show needs to find this genius and add him to the team! What a ride!
I really hope they are unreasonably high again when they find this video, and wonder whether or not it's real.
Insane how one man’s high search history got HBO to spend thousands of dollars into a whole marriage just to complete the story. That’s any persons dream
Yes, always delightfully whacky.
Oh I don’t have to imagine
The fact that John didn't take off his old wedding ring before marrying the cabbage makes me question how committed he is to his new bride.
This is a good point! John Oliver needs to be exposed! #CabbageGate #PrayForCabbage.
I think deep down, even he knew what was going to happen.
And at the end he yells “Not again!”? How many cabbage has this man devoured?! This has to be stopped!
Or his old bride for that matter.
Agreed!! And the cabbage was not even asked in fhe ceremony!
I love how at this point, nobody is even mildly surprised at Steve Buscemi showing up to officiate.
😂
Should do a clip on toxoplasmosis, complete with Usa navy research, and ALL of dr Flegr findings . Also , how the misguided veterinarians cover it up (the eggs live 2years in bleach water and still hatch , cats constantly re-infect themselves) . Effects: miscarriages, birth defects, headaches, flu symptoms, eye floaters, detached retina, cysts(often misdiagnosed) , schizophrenia , Parkinson’s, mild to severe depression, wild behavior
💀
I'm more surprised he isn't tapdancing :P
"Do you think god stays in heaven because he too lives in fear of what he's created?"
I was expecting this to be about the endless pit of legal confusion that is IP assignment on AI generated images and fair use of copyrighted images in public image banks, and instead got a beautiful wedding.
John has educated us enough, we're just doing his job for him in the youtube comments. Truly a wonderful time to be alive.
I bet that will be a video in the future as this technology improves
That was probably what it was originally gonna be, but then David Zaslav came in & was like "Hey! Ya can't bash these cool new business models!"
@Jasmine A. What business model, though?
@Fuchsia 'tude Replacing real artists with a machine.
I just love how the fact that this A.I. is unable to depict a marriage between a man amd a cabbage precisely pinpoints the reason why there are no self driving cars yet haha
how so?
@killmenowprettyprett well not literally, from a technical point of view obviously, but i mean that is precisely how it feels like haha
@killmenowprettyprett
AI deals better than humans with situations it has thousands of examples to learn from, yet fails catastrophically on edge cases. Marrying a cabbage is certainly an "edge case" :) ...
@Hexanitrobenzene "Ackchyually"
AI can't drive cars yet because interpreting a 3D environment in real time takes about 5 or 6 multi-core blade servers. Its not impossible, it would just be at least the size of the engine, and about the same cost as the rest of the car.
This is why Google and GM's practical attempts have both focused on mapping just the ground, a tech that was developed for those video parking guides and proximity alert systems you see now. That can be done with cheap CPU in a much smaller space. It works fine at low speeds on an empty road, but when Google tried to put their auto-driving car on a real road it got overwhelmed trying to map other car movements and slammed into a parked car trying to deal with other cars turning at an imperfect and unanticipated angle.
I'm fairly certain the flower budget for this episode cost more than my entire wedding put together
I fully braced myself for some depressing story on how A.I. images were killing the environment or democracy but instead I got a heartwarming tale of a love between a man and his cabbage. Life ain't so bad.
Yeah I agree, this segment felt more like his Web Exclusives where he rants over the weirdest things with passion
for the dark twist, how would/could the cabbage have given consent?
There is a serious problem with AI-generated art, which is how the programs behind it have been shown to carelessly rip off real human artists’ copyrighted works
This was already done in Avatar the last Airbender. Iterative, 6/10.
I don't know what I'm doing please help
Since I became a widow you have managed to not only make me laugh until I cried, but also to realize that I have a chance at love again - even if it's a cabbage. ♥😂❤
This comment made me tear up 🥺 so sorry for your loss. You can ABSOLUTELY love again, cabbage or not 💘
So sorry for your loss. So glad the cabbage made you laugh so much 💗
I would like to give it a try to be your cabbage. Pretty sure I would be great at that. Greetings, peace, love & Gesundheit from Germany
Cancer (🖕🏽) took the love of my life and I just want you to know that it never goes away, but it does get better. A time will come when you realize you haven't thought about them all day/week, and you'll be flooded with feelings of guilt.... but it's crucial that you process that emotion and realize that they would want you to move on and be happy. 🙂 God bless you and good luck.
John's Wife: "So, what did you do on your show tonight?"
John: "Nothing much really. I just married a cabbage."
John's Wife: "That's so sw- Wait, what was that last part?!"
Actually, I’m betting her response was:
“That’s nice..”
Mrs. John probably expected nothing less…
😉
That’s a really fun story but I really would love to see a real full story about the problems of ai image generators in the art world. Between stealing art styles to ownership issues I think it would be a really good one to cover seriously
"steeling" suuure, those mutated body parts are such a threat, Have you even looked at the "theft". Because I'll bet your mutant hands and feet you haven''t
Love this show. The fact that they went from the topic of AI Images, to Steve Buscemi officiating a wedding from him and a cabbage. Awesome writters
I was expecting him to dive into the AI’s potential threat to the art industry haha but this video is a lot of fun
Oh that one is coming, but probably further down the line once the consequences have become more clear. A bit early for the post mortem yet.
As an artist this has been so exhausting. I’m honestly grateful for something about it that isn’t extremely depressing. I hope he revisits it more critically in the future, but I suspect that would be a main piece and there’s still a lot going on with it that needs to happen before they can get super in depth about it
I love that this undoubtedly started with Julia just killing time on a lunch break browsing the internet on her phone and ended with HBO being asked to pay for a wedding chapel and a giant fake cabbage. That progression of events is glorious and one of the reasons why this show needs to go on forever
Don't forget the wedding being officiated by Steve Buscemi
What do you mean "fake cabbage"? :D
Nah. Oliver gets material for his show like this. He says as much with his micro pigs in a teacup bit
yeah that is probably how all of their episodes are birthed.
OMFG, I just checked John Oliver's wikipedia page.
"Spouse
Kate Norley (m. 2011)
Cabbage (m. 2022)"
I think we all know how the conversation in the writers room went.
Writers: So we tried to find images of you marrying a cabbage but they didn’t work. So should we just photoshop it?
John: No. You know what we need to do.
Who else was waiting for John to actually take a bite from the cabbage instead of kissing it ?😂😂
He does at the end
Mee😂
@Austin Bergen i meant during the ceremony 😂😂
@Jeevangikar Shraddha 🤣🤣
I think having John Oliver do elaborate performance art to prompts is the ideal solution to the art world AI debate
John Oliver is at his best when he gets genuinely surreal. This is beautiful.
This is why John Oliver wins the Emmy! So funny! Keep up the good work, John! Love watching your show.
This feels like a web exclusive that somehow spiraled into a full segment and I love it.
im not alone in thinking this thats great
i think its because it isnt depressing like the others (and its also 10 mins long)
I was about to comment the same
I thought I'd seen this before as a web exclusive. Pretty sure it's not deja vu since I can remember more details. Was it uploaded before?
I still can't convince myself this isn't one. Really, maybe it's just the lack of wanting to die in a corner. And surely we all needed it.
They included this in last week's show but only uploaded it now which was great because i got to experience it all over again
I like the light hearted stuff, but I've definitely always appreciated John Oliver's willingness to discuss major problems no other media outlets cover
John Oliver takes AI images to another level. Comedic gold!
In the old days we had to train the AI on specific images and generate thousands of random images to get a good one.
the devotion of John Oliver to his job is just insane
You think that John had to have a sit down with his wife and explain to her that he was going to be marrying a cabbage on TV because someone high off their ass made a cabbage fanfic about him through images generated by a computer?.......because I wanna know EXACTLY how that conversation went
It‘s no wonder that this show has won the Emmy basically every year. The other late-night shows are nice, but this is on another level.
Recently it feels like this show is written by AI
Other late-night shows are dumpster fires
The dedication to marry and divorce a cabbage for content is elite
When you make 1 show a week and you take 2 week breaks every month, it's not that hard to come up with a 10 minute video that's entertaining. He's not being forced to churn out episodes 5 days a week for weeks at a time. So, cut late night shows some slack.
It's honestly not fair because John is on HBO. He has such little restrictions on content and he has an expanded budget, a budget that isn't run on ad revenue.
But if you look at Seth's show, it has done some amazing things since covid started. They really leaned into their internet audience and have continued to lean in. Like Seth's corrections isn't even on television and was nominated. Not even the show lol, the segment lol. So things are changing. If we really do get Conan on HBO I'd like to see that wild ride.
Props to the person who created a large fake prop out of foam.
And so we can now imagine that the AI was actually predicting a future or manipulating it into becoming reality. This was an excellent episode!
I never wanted a big, bright, fake Cabbage before; but as soon as I saw John Oliver's lips sink in I yelled 'Smushy!' and experienced something physical; followed by deep longing to curl up with said Cabbage. You are a lucky man John Oliver !!
My greatest wish in the world now is that Steve Buscemi is actually ordained making this a legally binding marriage and now John has to get an annulment to avoid polygamy charges
I must say, it's quite nice hearing someone in the crowd who enjoys laughing and has very damn good one. Please invite this person more often. Now onto watch the other 8 min and 50 seconds of this video
Now I know why John Oliver has been so endearing. He understands our generation better than we understand ourselves
I watch all his videos, but John Oliver is certainly not endearing
huh? whatcha talking about
@Shadoninja that's certainly your opinion
@Tom There is an ender ring??? I only got the ender dragon!
@Pedro Pimenta no, just an elden ring.
It's so nice to have a lighthearted episode, and this one was sheer genius. A perfect mix of fun and bizarre - completely nailed it.
The world needs this. Thank you Mr. John . . .I love to imagine the meeting from which this wonderful "pick-me-up" AI tale spun! Hand towels please for the tears running over your face.
You know the thing is now that real pictures of John marrying a cabbage are on the internet, the AI can do a better job of making its own version of this beautiful cabbage union
This is why John’s show is still around after ten years. No one else does shit like this 😂
I was expecting him to make commentary on how AI Art is making it difficult for actual artists as more people call to use Image generators instead of paying artists to make actual art, but this is fine too
I live for this shit! Absurd humour is the best thing humankind as ever come up with 🙌
imagine being PostPoopZoomies and seeing both your prompts be shared online, and John getting invested in your accidental lore
Don't forget about Margaret! WTF
What a great name too lol
PostPoopZoomies is a legend for predicting this episode and creating 400+ prompts in anticipation. Well played, PostPoopZoomies!
Shows you how big the internet is, we may never have known about the work of these two of it wasn’t for this episode, I hope they are both loving the recognition of their silliness
dis person did it on purpose and it paid off lmao
I expected something on how it’s affecting the art world and possibly destroying the world. This is better, this is true art
Hey John and the team! I was wondering if you could potentially do another Taiwan episode discussing the escalating tensions, evolving situation, and other countries' involvement (choosing to visit Taiwan or not, what that all means, etc.) I am an American who is living in Taiwan right now, and so I am very much so aware of everything that is happening and feel like it is increasing enough to warrant doing one of your trademark thorough dives into. Thanks for readin this :)
Midjourney had a Version 4 update a few months ago and all of these images are way better now. You'd honestly be amazed at how lovingly John looks at this cabbage now, with no other person.
And that shows just how quickly these AIs are improving. We're all replaceable, AIs are just better at this now than we are. If it took 6 months for it to not understand how to do one person marrying a cabbage to making John a cabbagophile in total love with the cabbage and having Hollywood level CGI marriages to a plant, how confident are you that your boss won't look at your wage in 1/2/3 years and think "Yeah but ChatGPT though?"
Capitalism comes for us all
My favourite thing about all this is that John is now father, and we live in the perpetual age of the internet and this will all be immortalised forever on here most likely. One day, John's kids are going to sit down and watch this.
Its sad because this wedding is better than 90% of real weddings 🤣
Imagine being postpoopzoomies, and watching this episode high. It would be a highlight of humanity.
ya it was pretty neat
@Mother Superior the man has arrived
@Oliver Nicholds ouhhhhhh im a woman actuallyyyyy
@Mother Superior thelegend27
For some reason I was expecting an essay on the ethics of using AI to mimic distinctive artists styles without compensation, and instead I got this. I'm not disappointed, I don't think.
John raises a very interesting point here 0:09. Considering the entire video is about AI manipulating pictures, it IS weird that web developers still believe that the best way to differentiate people from non-people on the internet is by presenting them with a bunch of, you guessed it, pictures.
Regular appearances from Steve Buscemi is one of many reasons why this show is so great.
That after credits scene was a rush of emotions.
that cabbage wedding is going to be one of the only pieces of content aliens find after the apocalypse and boy its going to throw them off.
I love how most of the time he creates a deep think piece. But sometimes….sometimes he just marries a cabbage.
Meanwhile...
Wait now I've crossed the streams.
Yes!
The captcha checks with traffic lights is one of the best examples on the usage of crowd intelligence.
Google and other providers actually use this data generated by real world users to train their algorithms.
It started with recaptcha v2 where you would enter the home number from an address plate (this data was used for google maps).
You can test this because depending on the type of captcha you can submit wrong answers and still pass the test.
Didn't see that plot twist coming, now that is an amazing wedding photoshoot! As a MidJourney addict I can say they're currently testing a new version which would likely render a much more realistic cabbage wedding (and everything else I might add) so it's worth going back again and seeing the newest stuff!
Florals: stunning. Groom: dapper. Vows: heartwarming. Overall, a beautifully put together wedding. Though, considering the plain tulle of the veil, I think the cabbage might have waited until the last minute to order their attire. I can understand favoring simplicity for whatever reason; maybe it didn't want to be a bridezilla, or the elaborate beaded lace styles just don't reflect the cabbage's personality, or wanting to keep costs down; but it's your wedding day. You're going to want to remember this for the rest of your life. At least have the veil hemmed instead of leaving the edge raw.
This makes sense because John is the most memeable late night host. And you can tell he appreciates that.
What a whirlwind of emotions!
Thanks to everyone involved. I haven't laughed this hard in a long while.
Cabbage Love! 💚
Theres a certain kind of "cool" that comes from committing fully to even the silliest possible prompt. John Oliver somehow manages to avoid even this level of "cool" by being British. Never change John, we all love you to death
Last year with no place left to turn I prayed to God in repentance then begged for help with all my heart, "I was until then a lifelong Atheist."
I then had a dream of Jesus coming before God and he spoke of the Tabernacle in perfect context, "A word I didn't know existed because I've never read the bible", and the love I felt from Jesus was unlike anything I've ever felt before - A lifetime of joy every second - It brought me to sobbing and it changed my life forever.
I've had other miracles since, a few being a light turning on in answer to deeply needful prayer 6 times, seeing a orb of light hours before a major surgery, seeing an Angel in a dream the night my mother prayed for me to see one, "Without telling me", and so much more.
Know that God and Jesus ARE real and that they love us deeply. Let go of your hatred and Imagine yourself holding the people who've hurt you. Tell them you love and forgive them and I believe we should do our best to follow, "I've failed many times", the 10 commandments.
Always have hope. I believe that love is the answer.
Till night-eating-cabbage thorns us apart, amen!
In wilting and in health,
Until cabbage do us part… 🤵🏻💒 🥬 ❤️
@Sonja Iglesias amen comrade
We've been through alot on this show but this one takes the cabbage 😂😂
THE BEST PART is that all of those images that John provided will be fed back into the AI's ability to depict John Oliver with a cabbage.
I haven't laughed so hard in years, all because John needed to remedy Margaret's and postpoopzoomies's curiosity 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was the best 5 season Spanish soap opera I've ever binge watched to completion within a 30 minute breakfast!
This is the greatest cabbage love story since _Avatar: The Last Airbender._
😂
My cabbages!
aI so glad I wasnt the only one to think this.
My Cabbage Corp.!!
When the cabbage floated away from Tom Hanks in _Cabbagastaway_ >snif
Never thought I'd envy a cabbage. Will my unrequited love for JO and his team never cease?
One can physically FEEL Dan O’Brien’s writing in this. 💙💜
Thanks Steve Buscemi for being the first person to marry a man and cabbage (I hope). So beautiful. Haven’t cried like this since spy kids. You’re the best Steve!
I was expecting a story on how AI image generators are ripping off a lot of digital artists works, but I am still glad I tuned in to see him marry a Cabbage
"John Oliver will never be happy again. His heart is broken, but his stomach is full." That's his motto since accepting to do this show 8 years ago.
I don't know. His new business daddy might burn it all down and free him.
I'm sure even he never imagined what a shitshow we'd become.
@L Batemon 😱😱😱 don't say that!
omg we love you J.O! you always brighten my day and help me learn a lot while somehow presenting the most dreadful news. You're definitely my favorite Tucan and one of; if not my most favorite comedian of all time. oh, and thanks for a light duty laugh today; was wondering what biocidal AI monster had been spawned in China, Russia or the US of A. A pallet cleanse is good now and then. PS such a cute cabbage, she looks happy :D
He was actually just saving the cabbage from the slow painful death of rotting, so he ate her. So much love! 🥰
Thank you John oliver 🙏 😊
I really, really, really needed this today.
In all seriousness, I was having an actual panic attack, shit on top of shit on top of shit.
NOW I AM LAUGHING.
FUCKING THANK YOU!
❤
I have not laughed this much in months. Thank you
If your working on AI- don’t be a stupid droid about it😊 IF we’re so smart then we probably should realize by now we can make machines -NOT robots but machines that don’t move (or if they do they’re smaller than us so that we could always overtake them no matter what) working for us. In those days having a job will be a pleasure and a privilege and everybody would want to work to contribute!❤#ubuntu!!!
John's kids in like 10 years are going to find this video and start calling cabbages stepmom just to drive him insane.
That would be a really short trip.
You act like John didn't just take the cabbage home and introduce it to the kids as their stepmom already.
Did you pick up our stepmom from the store Dad??
Oh no stepmom what are you doing???!!!
John's kids are Brussel sprouts
Props to the props department for creating a ravishing cabbage!
I fully thought this was going to be about how we can use this app to sexualize people without their consent or something like that.
This was an unexpected beautiful twist
These are the things I hope later civilizations find for us... trying to understand what the heck we were on about.
Imagine getting high and making an inside joke with someone and then John Oliver does this with it... Truly a hero
John Oliver prompts are spiralling out of control on Midjourney's discord, and for good reasons. I played with it for and hour or so, and while some graphics were a bit hit and miss (baroque Silvio Berlusconi destroying a watermelon in a Ghost in the Shell urban landscape was a particular letdown for me), "John Oliver as a renaissance baby that hates satan, but loves cabbage" and "futuristic John Oliver as a Beksiński mermaid" produced lovely results. One of those faces, I believe.
I can already hear tucker carlson screaming “is this what the leftists want to normalize? First it was gay marriage, now we’re falling in love with groceries? Is this the America we want for our children?”
IKR LMAO
Someone is bound to have asked the AI to illustrate “Tucker Carlson tea bagging an M and M”
That's why the AI could not show John marrying a cabbage! It was programmed by Republicans!
@Dave Southword lol, that does make me want to search for those types.
Wow. I was laughing out loud at work on my break watching this. I took about a dozen screen shots just so I can prove this happened because if I described this episode to others they wouldn't believe me.
As the wedding photo shows, these things are still more A than I. Since nobody married a cabbage in real life(Until you), it drew on more "normal" wedding pictures. But after this episode, future cabbage wedding A.I. photos will be able to draw on your beautiful ceremony.
When John pulled back the veil on the cabbage I couldn't help my self and shouted, "FEED ME, Seymour!"
Hahahahahhaa yes!!!
Well, that was silly and lighthearted, which is appreciated. Is there any future discussion planned on these AI image databases that have not received permission to feature copyrighted works that are not in the public domain?
Honestly, the artists and AI wrote and illustrated this entire segment of the show, didn't they? John and staff, just "ran with it".
Not since Avatar the Last Airbender have I been so invested in a mans emotional relationship with a cabbage.
Surprised at how little likes your comment got. 😂
Thank you for saying it lol
MY CABBAGES
I yelled out "my cabbages!" When he ate the cabbage.
Was I expecting this segment to go the way it did? Not at all.
Am I disappointed? Also not at all.
In fact, I am very entertained and touched. And also very impressed by Johns dedication to correct the saga and really bring it to life❤️🥰
As fun as this was there is a ligitamate story to tell about AI and it's recent developments. Pros and Cons are getting more and more insane by the day.
even if it’s mostly from two people i’m not at all surprised to see john as the runaway late-night host of choice for the ai image discord server demographic
This is why John Oliver is the most watchable late night show
Respect for getting HBO to pay for all this
The least believable part of John marrying the cabbage, was the ease with which he lifted the cabbage to kiss it. It was at that point, I knew the cabbage had work done.
It's the cabbage's wedding day, they deserve to feel pretty.
Don't judge that cabbage's truth.
Just means she's less full, she mightve fluffed out her leaves for the occasion. Let her be a cabbage.
Is this a Physics's joke?
This is just amazing and hilarious. Thanks to John, Postpoopzoomies & Margaret
That's a beautiful cabbage, John. So happy for you! Wish you all the best.
okay. i’m glad the shows appeal to my generation’s sense of humor, but honestly, someone tell the writers that it’s getting harder and harder to explain things to my parents
Had an old kiddie record -that I really enjoyed until my dad in a fit of "why can't you keep you room clean"- threw against the wall and broke (oddly out of character for him) from a series called East of the Sun and West of the Moon.
It would start with an adult talking to some kids, and they were all on a roller coaster. The Foley was very effective and one really got the effect of the cars taking off.. off of the tracks.. to... THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT [or something or other].
There was a prince and a witch and a forlorn girl. He sent him manservant to the shrew's garden to collect a pea. The wind howled forlornly. The girl didn't herself, really; was just kinda forlorn.
Anyway, the witch would address the girl (who was basically like captive slave or something- I don't know what, exactly-) "my Little Cabbage".
Oh, and the garden was called
"The Garden of Woe".
Who would name their garden that?
Most people have The Princess and the Pea all wrong. It's not about complaining. I mean, come on! It's about being totally....
Ok, I'm too tired and it's late. Just accept there can be a whole diatribe, but my heart is just isn't into it.
Johnny, remember our long walks on the beach? Yeah, I don't either. 'Cause I don't think we did. Unless you count that night I showed you the vultures at night by the little theatre, roosting on the driftwood.
Or was that Seth Meyers?
Not roosting on the driftwood, mind you.
But I ramble.
(Cue music) Rambling Rose...!
-God, when did I learn to hate nostalgic music?
Maybe because I'm just steamed about a broken record.
I mean, Strawberry Fields Forever?? That's just some BULLSHIT. But probably just as well. I mean, forever is a mighty long time...
Somebody stop me. No, not you, Random Person Just Driving By:
JOHNNY.
-or maybe Seth.
Didn't I say stop me?
It's not that I'm pointless. Perhaps too many frustrated points.
Give a widdle bit?
Give a widdle bit of your time to to me.
Geddit??
I quit.
(See you later.)
-P.S. A strikeout font?
I gotta burn something, don't I?
Really. When did that turn into my trip?
Dammn it.
I am sorry.
Love the humorous take on this, but I'd also love to hear you talk on AI Artwork, art theft, and it's possible ramifications on the artistic community :0
This is like the third time I've seen steve buscemi on this show and at this point I'm convinced there's no gag he wouldn't do for them
Steve Buscemi is too good for this world, but I hope he never leaves
John is the favorite among birds 🐦. I'm telling you, he is FAMOUS. Owls 🦉, parrot 🦜 and uptight, red-billed hornbills
More like there's no gag he wouldn't do for HBO (and their parent WB), because they give him big roles too.
A double use of "at this point" makes it so that you are no longer at this point but in fact far from it
my guess is he lives close to the studio and is absolutely willing to do something silly for an afternoon for a show he respects
I've been obsessed with an AI generator for a few weeks now. Some of the images are brilliant, many beautiful, and a lot of hilarious outcomes.
Please, which one?
@Applied English MidJourney’s new test/testp modes are really good.
@Applied English I use night cafe AI
"What are we going to talk about this week?"
"Just have Steve Buschemi officiate a wedding between John and a cabbage"
I expected this to be some short piece on how AI images were causing major controversy in the art world. Instead, I got gorgeously decorated wedding between a man and a cabbage.
His marriage to a cabbage was more beautiful than any human to human wedding I've attended.
Fun fact, now the AI knows what a human marrying a cabbage will look like thanks to John Oliver.
